PAGE 117: Rabindranath TAGORE 1861 - 1941

Croquis rapide, graphite sur papier, 15 X 15 cm.

I discovered Tagore (Bengal-India) through the reading of his poetry book called in French "Le Jardinier de Lune", a long time ago.
I felt the Love beyound sadness and joy. The vulnaribilty and desire of hope of humankind. The hesitation and subtility of existence. The unknown and the known.

He was a multitalented artist, writer, composer, painter... In 2012, Le Petit Palais in Paris made a retroscpective exhibition of his paintings.
He received a Nobel Price in 1913, and created a private university, that still exists now in West Bengal (Santiniketan) Visva-Bharati University
official site of the university
wikipedia story about the creation of that school by Tagore

This is a nice site and page about Rabindranath Tagore with few extracts (in French) of his poems and texts:

Quote:

Extrait:

Une petite Journée (Ekti Din)

Cet après-midi là me vient à l'esprit.

some quotes from Henri Matisse Bio & Work

"A young painter who cannot liberate himself from the influence of past generations is digging his own grave."

"You study, you learn, but you guard the original naivete. It has to be within you, as desire for drink is within the drunkard or love is within the lover."

"An artist must never be a prisoner. Prisoner? An artist should never be a prisoner of himself, prisoner of style, prisoner of reputation, prisoner of success, etc."

 "Creativity takes courage."

PAGE 47: Pablo PICASSO 1881-1973

"All that can be imagined is real"

"In each child there is an artist.
The problem is to saty an artist when growing up"

"Il ne faut pas apprendre à dessiner"
"You don't have to learn to draw"

"Find the balance between nature and your imagination"

"When I paint, my purpose is to show what I have found, not what I'm looking for"

"I paint like others write their autobiography. My paintings, finished or not, are the pages of my diary (Journal) and as that, they are worthwhile. Future will choose the pages that it'll prefer, it's not at me to make the choice"

"Painting is stronger than me, it makes me do whatever it wants"

"Quand j'étais enfant, ma mère me disait:
"When I was a child, my mom said to me:
"If you become a soldier, you'll be a general. If you become a monk, you'll be a pope"
I wanted to be a painter, and I became PICASSO"

PICASSO!!!

And I think that, if Picasso would have been a woman, there would have never be any PICASSO!!!

PAGE 42: Marion Wagschal

Croquis rapide, graphite sur papier, 15 X 15 cm.

Well, it was Friday, October 20, 2012, a rainy day.
Went to the Battat Contemporary Galery, in Montreal. Marion Wagschal's last day exhibition "Works on Paper".

Received a shock.

How powerful her art is! Probably the reflection of a powerful soul...
I haven't felt that for a long time, for a living visual artist I mean.
Very expressive.
Strong line, and soft and pale colors. Very sensual too. Simply no mask.

A woman.
Born in the 40ies I think. From a Jewish family, that immigrated first on the Island of Trinidad, then to Canada.
A Montrealer Contemporary Visual Artist.

PAGE 10: Jacques Prévert 1900-1977

Croquis rapide, graphite sur papier

When I was a child, at school, every beginning of new scolar year, new teachers were asking me:
"What do you want to do, when you'll be older?"
To Do? Why not To Be, first?...

One of my answer was: Poet!

The universe of this poet was printed so intensively into my heart during my child and teenagehood.
Simplicity, purity, humour, and most of all, a huge humanist spirit.
He left school at age of 14 I think, and became one the most popular poet, scenarist and song writer of his time, till now.

His words have the taste of child drawings.

Jacques Prévert, 1900-1977, French Poet.
